But we knew the back door was left open, and Tom (Rutledge) was really frustrated. “This was during our evaluation period, and it so happened that this person was one of the people we had chosen to monitor. The screen snapshots showed she was going to inappropriate sites. I pulled Tom aside and hit the playback button for him to see what I had seen, and I watched his face go limp. “He thought it was the most incredible piece of software he had ever seen.” John Sibley There is a shared PC workstation in one particular area at the Summit Center. In a perfect IT world, a valid user would log on, conduct appropriate PC tasks, and log off when leaving the workstation. In this case, however, with just one individual logged on, many questionable activities were recorded by Spector CNE’s screen snapshots function. “Everyone from that area was contacted and we sat them down in a room and showed them the recordings. From my standpoint, it was great. I didn’t have to say a word, but they had to pick their jaws off the floor. Two hours later, everyone in the building knew what had happened. There were no terminations but the learning experience was powerful. Now nobody ever leaves the computer without logging off. And nobody loans their user ID anymore.” Daniel Anderson “When we got the software we had an investigation going on. The very first day, using Spector CNE snapshots, I watched someone producing documents that were an obvious major liability to the company. “I went to our VP with a printout of a screen shot. He showed it to the employee and asked her for the corresponding file. All she could say was ‘where did you get that?’ That was the beginning of the ‘stuff’ hitting the fan. The guilty student was caught. We use the snapshots a lot. Also the keystroke recording capability. The broadness of the program is impressive. He also had reconfigured his PC. I handed him a 17-page report on his activities and told him the deal. He got it and has been a model employee ever since.” Robert Elliott “The first week, the office manager would come in for at least an hour each morning and review employee activities. She found plenty of inappropriate activity … websites visited with names like Nordstrom.com and Guess.com … she said it was unacceptable and gave the employees ‘the full package’ … told them what was up.” John Sibley “Monitoring has had a positive effect on the surfing situation. There was a lot going on when they didn’t think we were monitoring. Now I rarely see anything I’m concerned about.” Eugene O’Neal “The ability to BLOCK access to web sites or to ALLOW access just to certain sites … senior management really liked this option. Essentially it’s black list or white list … we chose to use a white list. In my opinion, that’s the only way to do it.” Joseph Milton “Recording the screen snapshots, along with keystrokes typed, emails sent and received, and websites visited … for us, these are the key criteria for activity monitoring software. The majority of our concerns are addressed by these four features of Spector CNE.” Daniel Anderson “The keystrokes feature is really an excellent way to look at what employees have done. Are they working a program they’re not licensed for, and what data are they entering?
