The Setting
Renato Inacio, Director of Information Technology, oversees a computer network serving nearly 50 employees at the two locations. Powered by a Windows 2003 Server, PC workstations run XP Pro. In addition, Inacio uses a Citrix server for remote connections. The Challenge Inacio said a combination of events, good housekeeping, and rapid organizational growth dictated the need for employee monitoring. We grew from 7 employees to 46 employees in about 18 months, said Inacio. It was a big change a real challenge to manage the IT side without a technology tool. With seven employees, you can keep track of what's going on by walking around and paying attention. However, once the head count approached 50, Inacio and the firm's management recognized that with physical oversight impossible, people will take advantage of an environment like ours. It will happen, Inacio said, referring to excessive nonwork activities at PCs with Internet connections. Especially for those with a little more time on their hands. Search for a Solution
Price and performance, these are big for any firm, and Spector CNE looked good on both those counts, said Inacio. But Spector CNE's simplicity and user-friendliness really sold us. The latter features and benefits were especially important because Inacio said one of the firm's key individuals required ease of use and reporting, attributes for which Spector CNE is noted. The other programs we reviewed were just too complex, said Inacio. Discoveries Despite Spector CNE's application more as a deterrent to inappropriate activity, Inacio said he and the firm's partners had their eyes opened over Spector CNE's ability to record all employee Internet and PC activity, and archive those recordings for later review. We knew some employees were slacking a little, but it was amazing to see how much more was occurring, said Inacio. The discovery phase was a little surprising, and a little shocking. Spector CNE: The Software of Choice If you have more than 10 employees or so, you need Spector CNE, said Inacio. Everyone should consider monitoring software because you can't be at your employees' backs, and Windows policies are just not enough.
Is Spector CNE worth it? YES, said Inacio. You can AVOID problems like sexual harassment, email abuse, peer-to-peer downloading ALL OF IT. Some people are easily offended, and eliminating the potential for explicit images PREVENTING these things from happening it's just good business practice. -- -- -- -- -- -- For more information about Fann, Petruccelli & Genovese, please visit www.fplawyers.com.
